Estimation of bedload sedimentation rate in a paleo-drowned river-valley

Abstract Extensive, high-resolution seismic data were correlated with borehole, land use, and geological to calculate the mass of genetically different sediment deposits in Middle Harbour estuary Sydney, Australia. is a drowned-river valley located adjacent larger Sydney estuary. The follows well-defined sedimentation model featuring small fluvial bedload delta upper reaches embayments, deep, central extensive mud basin overlying transgressive basal accumulations large flood-tide at entrance. Deposits an estimated 5094 t bedload, 21,143 suspended 5947 material provided average accumulation rates 0.68 year −1 , 1.29 2.86 respectively. These rates, determined from measured accumulations, surprisingly low substantially smaller than modelled rates. However, for may be due fine escaping over top marine tidal delta, which effectively traps all exiting Harbour. Results this study indicate that Holocene was slow regular until rapid increase after urbanisation commenced catchment. Most pre-Holocene eroded during Last Glacial period currently present having been deposited since sea-level recovery.
